Home / Blog / Rants / The Best Thing About the Transformers: RoTF Movie? The Avatar Trailer Beforehand
Yup, sorry. Words cannot describe how little I enjoyed the Transformers film this afternoon. As the plot trudged from one improbable set piece to the next, my mind kept wandering back to the EPIC Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer that ran before the movie. If you’re not an Avatar fan, well then, your nerdcore,md credentials may need to be checked. Introduced to me about two years ago by the fellas from the Totally Rad Show (via their blog – I’m not that popular), my wife and I, along with a small consortium of med-student / resident / fellow friends have been completely hooked. The three part series ran as a show for Nickelodeon, giving most people the idea that it was a children’s program. Well, perhaps, but if Pixar have shown us anything, it is that emotionally compelling art need not always carry an ‘R’ rating. From beautifully choreographed martial art sequences, to the glorious character development and the multiple nods to Miyazaki, it is a show unlike anything else we’ve seen on Nick, let alone anywhere else. And when I found out that M. Night was taking the reins for the live action adaptation, I was completely stoked. If he can coax the same inspiring performances out of his cast of young actors and actresses that he did with Haley ‘I see dead people’ Joel Osment, then we may just have another Speilburg-esque trilogy on our hands. Here he is chatting with the co-writers about the film. Yip Yip!
