Coxiella burnetii are evil creatures, which revel in torturing all manner of Soma inhabitants. They are some of the most invasive of all the Pestilence agents that threatens Soma’s wellbeing, with only a few individuals capable of entering through the Respiro Forest and subsequently multiplying and spreading throughout the land. They are highly resistant to most natural defenses, including heat and UV from the sun, as well as to standard cleansers used to purge the land of lingering invaders after the Apothecaries have X the immediate threat.
When C. burnetii enter Soma, they trigger pain and discomfort in Sententia, irritation in the Respiro Forest, and other relatively mild annoyances. But if untreated, their armies can grow and linger for months. There are a handful of Apothecaries that can successfully defeat the Lords, though occasionally their combined efforts are necessary.
Until just a few years ago, it was impossible to capture C. burnetii, which are not only capable of escaping standard capture nets but also tend to perish as soon as they are removed from the land, so all that was known about the horrid creatures was what the Apothecaries could report from the field. But in 2009, scouts devised a new strategy for raising the Pestilence agents in a highly sterile environment, allowing the Apothecaries to develop new tactics to thwart C. burnetii herds in the wild.
