From the seas of the North to the deserts of the East, Klebsiella pneumoniae can be found throughout Soma’s communities, as well as being common to the uninhabited regions of the land. They can often live peacefully among the local inhabitants, but should a region’s defenses be weakened for any reason, K. pneumoniae will seize the opportunity to devour its full, causing extensive damage to nearby forests, filtration systems, dwellings, and more. Even with the valiant efforts of the Apothecary armies, such attacks can often result in widespread death. K. pneumoniae invasions can leave the land barren and black, save the bloody remains of the massacre’s casualties, which ooze from the war-torn forest after the savage warriors take their leave. K. pneumoniae are particularly prevalent in Soma’s infirmaries, where they prey on the weak and unbalanced, as well as the alcoholic inhabitants that indulge in the tinctures brewed from fermented wildflowers.
Unlike most Lords, K. pneumoniae have the unusual ability to utilize atmospheric nitrogen, allowing them to generate valuable resources from a normally useless gas and survive in the absence of oxygen. Their sugary shields, comprised of both the common LPS fibers and similar K fibers, protect them from being killed and eaten by Soma’s natural defenders, and they have also begun to evolve resistance to many of the Apothecaries’ attacks, deriving powerful defenses from their fellow Lords. Ciprofloxacin, for example, once a formidable nemesis of K. pneumoniae, is now often ineffective against the villains’ relentless assaults. Alternative strategies are often needed to supplement the efforts of the Apothecaries, and are still sometimes not enough. K. pneumoniae‘s wrath will likely haunt Soma for a long time coming.
